JUNIOR
AMBASSADORS

ABOUT THE JUNIOR AMBASSADORS PROGRAM

The SAGE Junior Ambassadors program is an interactive training experience of 2-4 hours per week plus a community outreach activity hosted by the echo network, Medha Foundation and Vigyan Shaala. Using a five-step process, this program was designed to leverage the power of trust through our science-based network. The program consists of a 4-week course + 6-week independent project for community action. `Equal numbers of students are selected from Medha Foundation and VigyanShaala programs, and both programs assist with course logistics and student selection.

This unique program includes training in listening to communities, employing inclusive and equitable communication techniques, engaging in storytelling and multilingual media, exploring various communication techniques, and creating an effective communication plan. These student ambassadors learn about and then raise awareness of sustainability issues in their home communities regarding health, agriculture, ecosystems, and the circular economy. At the end of the community activities, local community members share current concerns they experience regarding these topics, and the ambassadors respond to those community needs with targeted, evidence-based actions provided by scientific experts, companies, and organizations in our network.

ONLINE CLASSES

Community Science Communication
JAs are introduced to the overarching goals of the program, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in promoting scientific awareness. Participants learn fundamental communication theories and models, along with practical skills such as active listening and clear messaging. This foundation sets the stage for engaging with diverse audiences.

Facilitating Dialogue with Communities
JAs are trained in techniques for fostering constructive dialogues within their communities. This includes strategies for engaging stakeholders, conducting focus groups, and gathering feedback. Emphasis is placed on building trust and rapport, ensuring that community members feel valued and heard throughout the communication process.

Respect, Diversity, and Inclusion
Understanding the diverse backgrounds of community members is crucial. JAs explore the concepts of respect, diversity, equity  and inclusion in communication. They learn to tailor their messages to be culturally sensitive and relevant, promoting equitable access to information and ensuring that all voices are included in discussions.

Communication through Storytelling
Storytelling is a powerful tool for conveying complex scientific ideas in an accessible manner. JAs are trained in crafting narratives that resonate emotionally with audiences, making science relatable and engaging. They learn how to use personal anecdotes and local stories to illustrate scientific concepts, fostering a deeper connection with their audience.

Mediums of Communication
Participants explore various channels and platforms for communication, including social media, community events, and educational workshops. JAs assess the strengths and weaknesses of different mediums to determine the most effective methods for reaching their target audiences. This section also covers the basics of visual communication and the use of multimedia tools.

Communications Planning
Developing a strategic communications plan is essential for effective outreach. JAs learn how to identify goals, target audiences, key messages, and timelines. They engage in hands-on activities to create actionable plans tailored to their specific projects, ensuring that their efforts are organized and impactful.

AMBASSADOR MENTORSHIP

Each JA is paired with a Senior Ambassador (SA) based on shared interests and expertise. This pairing is designed to enhance the JAs’ skills through collaborative planning and feedback. SAs provide guidance on developing communication strategies, offering insights drawn from their own learnings.

To further support the JAs, each project is also assigned a mentor—an expert from our network. These mentors play a crucial role in providing constructive feedback and strategic advice for community action. This mentorship ensures that JAs are well-equipped to engage their communities in meaningful ways that will ensure sustained action.

INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION

JAs participate in structured feedback sessions throughout the program. These sessions provide opportunities for participants to share their experiences, challenges, and successes with peers and mentors. Constructive feedback is encouraged, allowing JAs to reflect on their communication practices and receive guidance for enhancement.

SHOWCASE

A showcase event is organized at the midpoint of the program, serving as a platform for JAs to present their projects and progress. This event allows participants to share their challenges and successes, fostering an environment of collaboration and support. Peers and mentors provide valuable feedback, helping JAs refine their strategies and overcome obstacles. This mid-point reflection not only boosts confidence but also enhances the overall effectiveness of their initiatives.

Through these evaluation and feedback processes, JAs develop their skills and become more effective advocates for scientific advocacy and action within their communities.
